We are back at Brickworks for a wintery and well rounded NAM #44 with new and familiar faces. Join Jean-Marie Spencer, Harrison Smart and Todd de Hoog (SSdH), Blair Smith (Blair Smith Architecture), Kaia McCarty-Smith (wilderness Building co) and Mel Bright (Studio Bright), for a wide ranging conversation traversing their collective cross section of experience in creating considered places for people to live.

SSdH

Established in 2020 in Naarm/Melbourne, SSdH is an emerging architecture practice pursuing thoughtful and honest spaces through the celebration of design and the everyday. SSdH hopes to enrich the way people experience the built environment by considering the value created by architecture. They aim to bring innovative design thinking, thoughtful material exploration, respect for contextual design and high-quality sustainable outcomes to projects of all scales. A collaborative process opens SSdH up to a full range of project types and procurement methods and allows them to innovate design thinking through every stage of a project, from briefing to delivery.

Blair Smith Architects

Blair Smith Architecture is a Melbourne based studio, creating spaces that are both poetic and pragmatic in a way that enriches each lived experience.
A fundamental approach within the practice is to expand on the aspirations of the client, resulting in architecture that embodies a thoughtful, open-minded design process. Seeking joy within the process of making is a key studio methodology. This stems from a natural propensity to draw, through to collaborative relationships with specialist trades, consultants and clients alike.

Wildness Building Co

Kaia McCarty-Smith is the founder of Wilderness Building Co, a residential and commercial building practice. Having 14 years experience in the building industry, he was initially critical of what he observed and he wondered whether it was possible to do better. After observing the cultural dynamics and environmental problems that beset the industry, he formed Wilderness Building Co. to explore what a modern, progressive and environmentally conscious building company could be. With a sharp focus on Passivhaus, reducing waste, adaptive re-use and the retrofit typology, they have recently completed Australia’s first net-zero retrofit of an apartment building.

Studio Bright

Mel Bright is the Principal and Design Director of Studio Bright, a Melbourne based practice that has gathered a collection of diverse and highly acclaimed built work.
Studio Bright is best known for its many award winning houses, but the practice has also recently completed  a number of significant city making projects across a variety of scales and types including civic, educational and multi-residential projects. Mel has led the Studio Bright team since starting the practice in 2006. Prior to this, Mel has worked in numerous design practice’s locally and internationally. Across London, Europe, South East Asia and China, this broadly-based lineage of work experience has allowed Mel a long gestation of the ethos that underpins Studio Bright today.

Studio Bright projects are widely published and recognised both locally and internationally.
